Riot Games announced that the League of Legends World Championship 2025 will have a $5 million prize pool, making it the most lucrative event in its history.

The news comes months after the conclusion of LoL Worlds 2024, which became the most-watched esports tournament in history, with nearly 7 million viewers tuning in to watch T1 defeat Bilibili Gaming in the grand finals.

Held between September 25 and November 2, LoL Worlds 2024 was the 14th iteration of the annual international tournament, yet the biggest one yet.

Riot now intends to grow its flagship event with more changes set to be put in place for this year’s iteration.

Earlier this month, Riot Games announced format changes, which include a decrease in team slots to 17 (from 20).

Moreover, two regions will gain an additional slot at the season-culminating event based on their Mid-Season Invitational 205 performances, securing spots for their region in the play-in stage.

By upping the prize pool to $5 million, Riot Games will more than double the prize pool of LoL Worlds 2024, which stood at $2.25 million.

However, the LoL World Championship is not the only international LoL esports tournament with a boosted prize pool.

The upcoming Mid-Season Invitational 2024, which offered a $250,000 prize pool in 2024, will not have nearly eight times that amount on the table for this year’s edition – at $2 million.

This, in addition to the newly introduced and recently finished Firs Stand event – which offered $1 million – sees the total international LoL events prize pool sit at $8 million on the year.

“The goal of LoL Esports is not to become a high-revenue operation; we are focusing on building a self-sustaining ecosystem,” said Chris Greeley, Global Head of LoL Esports.

We are in constant communication with teams, working on strategies to ensure financial viability and exploring new ways to generate revenue that benefit the entire ecosystem.

LoL World Championship 2025 is set to be held in China from October 4 to November 2, 2025, when 17 LoL esports teams will vie for the coveted Summoner’s Cup.
