Astralis and FaZe Clan lost their first games of BLAST Open Spring 2025 and will now face off in Group A lower bracket quarterfinals on Friday, March 21, marking their second clash of the season and the first time since PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025, when Astralis won in three maps.

The rematch is expected to end in FaZe Clan’s favour, as they enter this match as betting favourites. Yet I have a hard time finding a good reason to back FaZe at 1.66, especially after their humiliating loss to Virtus.pro in the previous round.

This is a 50/50 match at best, and while FaZe Clan arguably have a higher ceiling, that means nothing until they start performing better.

Astralis entered BLAST Open Spring 2025 with a point to prove after showing some signs of life at PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 with a third-place finish. However, the Danes did not have the best start to the tournament, as they had to admit defeat to the surging Vitality (0-2).

As anticipated, it was a very one-sided series, with Team Vitality winning 13-4 on Inferno and 13-6 on Dust II. That result is not so much an indication of Astralis’ weaknesses but more an indication of how good Vitality are.

While it is hard to defend a team that put together just 10 rounds in their first match of the tournament, I’ll need to see more from Astralis to say where they stand.

Like Astralis, FaZe Clan have not had the most inspiring start to the season, nor did they impress in the first round of BLAST Open Spring 2025.

FaZe Clan kicked off the tournament with a humiliating loss against Virtus.pro, who defeated them with a reverse sweep – with 16-13 on Ancient and 13-0 on Dust II. Seeing a team lose 0-13 does raise some questions and does not paint a very good look for FaZe ahead of their rematch against Astralis.

One bad game, especially after a month-long break, does not prove much. But as they’ve shown, FaZe Clan are not in the best shape and probably should not be viewed as firm favourites against any team.

Verdict

Astralis v FaZe Clan

FaZe Clan and Astralis have not had the best start to BLAST Open Spring 2025, and they both have a lot more to prove heading into Friday’s affair. Neither looked good in their opener, but now that they’ve gotten a chance to shake off the rust, we can expect a better showing from both.

On paper, FaZe Clan look like the better team, but that is only due to their higher ceiling. That, however, does not prove much, considering FaZe have not been playing well lately.

I expect this to be a scrappy affair, which can go either way. By this logic, Astralis, at outsider odds, are an obvious pick.
