Chennai Super Kings were poor last season as they finished fifth in the table, denied a place in the playoffs by their inferior net run rate.

Chennai Super Kings are looking for a big response in 2025 after they were unable to give their fans any form of playoff cricket in 2024.

Seven wins took CSK onto 14 points, as many as fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore. In a season in which Sunrisers Hyderabad in second were just three points clear of Lucknow Super Giants in seventh, CSK will have been disappointed to have disappeared into the chasing pack. Ultimately, they were denied a place in the playoffs by their inferior net run rate to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was excellent last season as he notched 583 runs at 53.00. His exploits with the bat in hand will be vital to CSK's hopes of improving on their poor campaign last year. While I predict a tight clash between the two sides, home advantage will play a part. CSK have won two of their last three at home, while MI have lost their last four on the road.

Mumbai Indians Form

It was a season to forget for MI in 2024, with the side slipping to 10 defeats in 14 matches, meaning they were 12 short of Kolkata Knight Riders at the top of the table.

The second-half of their season should have seen them gearing up for a push towards the top-four. As it was, MI were beaten in six of their final seven, with this showing how far off the pace they were in 2024.

While 2025 will bring renewed hope for the side, their away record in 2024 does not fill me with confidence. CSK are also hoping to begin the campaign with a renewed sense of purpose, and I predict that having to make the trip to face their opponents will end in MI losing their opening match.
