Panathinaikos vs Alba Berlin Preview

In Round 30 of the EuroLeague, reigning champions Panathinaikos host last-placed ALBA.

Anything other than a home win would be a major shock—one that even the most die-hard supporters of the German club find hard to believe in.

Panathinaikos Form & Team News

The reigning EuroLeague champions seem to be cruising through the regular season on autopilot, with the expectation that they will shift into a higher gear once the playoffs begin.

With five rounds remaining, their only goal is to secure a Top 4 finish and home-court advantage. That shouldn’t be a problem, given their favorable schedule and a one-win cushion over their closest challengers.

PAO’s impressive 11-game winning streak across all competitions came to an end last round with a narrow 76-74 road loss to arch-rivals Olympiacos. Despite struggling offensively and shooting poorly, they still managed to erase a 19-point deficit and had a chance to win in the final moments.

Kendrick Nunn delivered what was arguably his weakest EuroLeague performance of the season, finishing with just 7 points and 5 turnovers. However, there’s little doubt he’ll step up when it matters most.

Marius Grigonis, Mathias Lessort, and Omer Yurtseven remain sidelined due to injuries.

Alba Berlin Form & Team News

ALBA have had a complete disaster of a season in the EuroLeague, registering just 5 wins after 29 games.

One of those rare victories came in the previous round when they defeated Baskonia 97-90 at home.

A key hero in this unexpected win was excellent shooter Matt Thomas, who scored 21 points with an impressive shooting performance of 8/10 from the field. Three other ALBA players also posted double-digit scoring: Hermannson with 13 points, Procida with 13, Baker with 12, and Wetzell with 11.

Talks are growing louder about ALBA potentially missing out on next season’s EuroLeague, and it won't be long before we know their fate in the competition.

With a very tough and unfavorable schedule in their last 5 games this season, any additional win would be the maximum they could hope for from these upcoming matchups.

Head to Head

These two teams met in the first round of the competition, where the Greeks claimed a victory with a 87-77 scoreline. Kendrick Nunn was the standout performer in that game, finishing as the top scorer with 16 points.

Verdict

The quality gap between these two clubs is massive, and I expect the hosts to demonstrate that on the court.

PAO are in a position where they have not yet secured a Top 4 finish, so it’s likely they will come out fully engaged and motivated from the very first second of this game.
