Olympiacos vs Crvena Zvezda Preview

In a heated brotherly derby, the hosts step onto the court in a festive mood, while the visitors from Belgrade are bracing for a tense and uncertain period ahead.

Will Olympiacos seek redemption for their earlier defeat this season, or will Crvena zvezda surprise them with an unexpected victory, handing the Greeks only their third home loss of the campaign?

Olympiacos Form & Team News

With only five games left in the regular season, Olympiacos are almost there in securing the top spot for the playoffs.

They’ll be chasing their seventh consecutive win against Crvena zvezda, the team that handed them one of only seven losses this season.

Their most recent victory came against Panathinaikos in a nail-biting 76-74 win. Despite having a 14-point lead halfway through the final quarter, Olympiacos almost let the game slip away.

In the final moments, Kostas Sloukas missed a three-pointer that would’ve been the dagger for his former club’s supporters.

Keenan Evans has begun training with the team and is getting closer to returning to the court. Thomas Walkup’s situation is still uncertain, and it’s unclear whether he’ll play again this season. Meanwhile, Nigel Williams-Goss has a minor leg issue but should be good to go for the next game.

Crvena Zvezda Form & Team News

After a 16-10 record and a potential shot at a direct playoff spot, Crvena zvezda have hit a rough patch, losing three straight and now finding themselves battling just to stay in the top 10.

While they still control their own fate, the situation isn’t looking good. On top of the loss to Milano in the previous round, they’ve now lost their best player, Joel Bolomboy, to injury again. This marks the second time this season that he’s been sidelined, and it’s likely to keep him out for the team’s most important games.

To make things even tougher, coach Sfairopoulos won’t have Luka Mitrovic available for this match, and Filip Petrusev is also out due to a mutual agreement between the clubs preventing him from playing against his parent team.

Crvena zvezda will have to take on the league’s best team without a true center and will likely need to rely on some unconventional solutions.

In addition to the absences of these three, they will also be without Mike Daum, who’s been injured for a while but is getting closer to a return.

Head to Head

In recent seasons, Crvena zvezda have had a solid record in their matchups against Olympiacos, which is something they can use to fuel their optimism. The Belgrade team have won 5 of the last 7 encounters between the two sides.

Verdict

If the visitors were at full strength, this could have been a highly tense and exciting game. However, with the current lineup and without a true center, it’s just a matter of time before the hosts take control.

Olympiacos are simply too strong and deep a team to make a mistake against such a depleted opponent.
