Fenerbahce vs ASVEL Preview

In Round 29 of the EuroLeague, Fenerbahçe will host French side ASVEL at Ülker Sports Arena. The hosts are aiming for their third consecutive victory, while the visitors hope to end a tough streak of five straight losses.

It looks like another easy win for the former European champions.

Fenerbahce Form & Team News

At the moment, the top spot on the table may seem out of reach, but Fenerbahçe is on track to secure home-court advantage in the playoffs.

With a record of 18 wins and 9 losses, they sit in second place, one game ahead of third-placed Panathinaikos and two wins clear of Monaco and Bayern Munich. In their last outing, they played one of their best games of the season, easily beating Milan 100-76 on their home court.

Veteran Erick McCollum led the way with 18 points, while Wade Baldwin had his best performance since returning from injury, scoring 15 points. The team’s standout player, Nigel Hayes-Davis, chipped in with 14 points.

Fenerbahçe also played a domestic league game in the meantime, defeating Petkim Spor 88-75, which served as a great tune-up for their upcoming match.

ASVEL Form & Team News

In the past month and a half, Asvel have fallen into a slump in the Euroleague that they just can't seem to escape. Since their win over Barcelona, they’ve lost the next five games. While none of these defeats were blowouts, at the end of the day, only the score matters.

Their most recent loss came last week against Maccabi Tel Aviv at home, where they were defeated 102-97.

The game started on the wrong foot for the hosts in the fourth minute when their best player, Theo Maledon, had to leave the court due to a finger injury. Without his help, Asvel simply didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with the energetic guests, resulting in their 17th loss of the season.

Although a dislocated finger doesn’t usually require a long recovery, Maledon's availability for the game against Fenerbahçe is still uncertain, with more details expected to come on the day of the match.

In addition, Asvel will also have to cope without Mbaye Ndiaye, who has been ruled out for the season due to a serious knee injury.

Head to Head

Fenerbahçe have had much more success in recent head-to-head matchups against Asvel. The Istanbul team has won 4 of the last 5 meetings, including the victory in the first matchup of this season.

Verdict

Coach Jasikevičius has seamlessly woven his team together, and they’ve been performing at an exceptional level this season. Each player understands their role perfectly, despite a bit of congestion in the backcourt.

One of their deadliest weapons is the three-point shot—when it starts falling early in a game, opponents are quickly put on the back foot. Asvel will be in for a tough challenge, especially since defensively, they’re struggling to find their rhythm at the moment.
